These CSI projects are a great way to capture your students’ interest in math.
This activity is also great to use as a fun Halloween math activity.
This activity has a short story at the start which sets up your class for an adventure where they have to find out which of the creatures is the skeleton bride’s forgotten fiancé. Also included with this resource is a video – please check it out before showing it to your class to judge whether it is appropriate for them. It can be used as a video hook to get your students interested in the math challenge.
This pack now includes a print version a Google Classroom and a BOOM card version for distance learning with your students! With the Google Classroom and Boom Card version your students can fill in editable textboxes and move images to complete the activity online!
Four math clues which your students will need to solve in order to uncover who the skeleton bride’s fiancé is. The clues are:
Hidden Message: Students use their basic facts, mainly multiplication, in order
to uncover a hidden message left by the witch.
Basic cardinal directions and long addition: Students map the witch’s flight
path.
Decimal addition – Students figure the weight of the ingredients in magic vials.
Fractions – Students work out how much pizza each creature ate.
After the students have found out which creature is the skeleton bride’s fiancé they can complete the last activity to find out which room is the witch’s spell room. To make this activity shorter you don’t have to include this sheet.
Two early finisher activities are also included. Keep these on hand to give to your students who finish early. One of the extra activities is a short writing activity and the other is a haunted house multiplication maze.
Halloween Math Escape Room: VulderFrank Haunted House. A Halloween Math Mystery!
A spooky way to engage your students with math this Halloween, a math escape room they will love!
This activity includes a print and go version, which is easy to set up and perfect for a fun math adventure. There is also an expanded version, with the same questions, but each clue/task has been expanded over several pages so they can be cut out and put in envelopes to create even more engagement.
The Story:
This activity takes your students on an adventure where they are trapped in the Vulderfrank family mansion and they need to find hidden keys in order to escape. “WAIT!” you yell, “I just want to go home!” The boy smiles at you, “Here’s a hint – I’ll hide the first key in the attic somewhere”. He then rushes off in a green blur – much too fast for you to follow.
Find the correct keys, draw the symbol of each correct key in the door locks. This will unlock the door and allow you to go home.
Math Tasks:
Math Maze: A multiplication and basic facts maze around the Vulderfrank mansion.
The Attic: Spiders galore; Decimal addition and subtraction.
The Trophy Room: Rounding and place value.
The Library: Decoding a hidden message by adding fractions with like denominators.
Vulderfrank Family Gallery: Triple digit addition.
Courtyard Chaos: Exponents.
Tasks can be removed to make the activity shorter if needed.
The story continues throughout the Math adventure as the students complete the tasks.
There is also an early finisher or extra activity.
Writing Activity: The secret path.
Halloween Math Activity: Haunted House Multiplication Math Maze Printable.
A great fun way to reinforce multiplication facts, Ideal to use as a bell-ringer, math warm-up or early finisher activity.
You need to get from the Front Door to the Attic- that is where there is a secret escape from this haunted mansion. However, the only way you can get there is by answering the questions and then following the route where the numbers are always larger then 40. All the other rooms with answers less then 40 are haunted by not so friendly ghosts, they may have left booby-traps so you are best to avoid them. Good luck on making your escape.
